Tonight, on Sunday August 22, we find ourselves at the Detour MI Harbor Marina in the Village of Detour…not an inappropriate name for a stop at this point in our lives.
As some of you know, we made “Whitefish Bay” last Thursday. We came across the open water from Grand Marais MI under fair skies and nearly calm seas, unlike the sailors on the Edmund Fitzgerald. We docked just south of Whitefish Point at a primitive state harbor of refuge. No services, but the beach, water clarity and swimming were stunning.
We crossed the Bay the next morning and started flirting with the big boats (freighters) on our way to the Soo locks. Sad to be leaving such a beautiful lake behind, but relieved that the large expanses of 300 + ft deep water with no refuge or other boats in sight for hours is done. We locked through at the Soo on the Canadian side which was a first and a little stressful for me. But the staff were friendly and helpful in their direction. Found safe harbor for 2 nights at George Kemp Marina in downtown Sault STE Marie. Rode bikes to a great walleye fish fry on Friday night while Zeke escaped his crate and entertained other boaters and marina staff in our absence. (We again received requests to ” leave Zeke behind when we left” due to his friendly nature). Spent part of Saturday ridding the boat of Lake Superior sand (inside), and spiders and spider poop (outside). Yes, it’s visible and it stains!
Left the Soo area this morning and traveled “downbound” on St. Mary’s River to our location at Detour, which is where the river dumps into Lake Huron. We hope to spend tomorrow evening anchoring out in Les Cheneaux Islands near Cedarville (marina is too shallow for us). We hear there’s a great bakery near the town dock if we hop in the dinghy to get there. Now we haven’t yet had 2 adults and Zeke all in the dinghy together, but we’ll have to give it a try… The following day we’ll travel to St Ignace, Mackinac Island or Mackinac City and plan our journey down Lake Michigan.
Tomorrow is our 46th wedding anniversary, so we’ll be celebrating a little tonight and tomorrow K9 as we find ourselves on this “Detour” in our lives!
